Want to Help Publicize This Story?
I'd love reviews of these books on Amazon, or anywhere else you like to get your e-books! Also, I'd love reviews on Goodreads for Book 1, Book 2, or Book 3. If you'd like to publicize the online serial, please go to my Muse's Success or Web Fiction Guide pages and leave a review. If you're the shy type, you could simply go to those pages and choose to rate the listing (although you may need to create an account to do that, in some places), or you could simply vote for Super on Top Web Fiction. Thank you!
I've been fascinated by the idea of superheroes since the time I was a child, and this series began as a series of thought exercises for me. What if people with abilities beyond the norm did exist in our current world? How would that be able to happen? Would we even recognize that they existed? How would our society deal with them? How would they deal with what they can do, and what would they think their responsibilities to themselves and the rest of us are? Some of the answers that came to me were interesting and some disturbing, and I invite you in to find out what conclusions I came to...
I have so many people to be grateful to that this work ever came into being, but one of my most constant supporters has been my wonderful husband, and I need to thank him first for encouraging my writing, for allowing me the time and space to write (since our time together is always precious), and for being my test reader. Having the gift of his perspective has been priceless, as has the gift of his support, and I offer my undying thanks in return.
I'd also like to dedicate this work to the people throughout my life who have helped me, taken me in, given me opportunities, mentored me, and cared for me. When I was cast out of my home at age sixteen under threat of death from my parents, after years of mental, physical, and emotional abuse at their hands, I expected nothing but more of the same. To my great surprise, time and time again I found myself taken in and given opportunities instead. I graduated high school and continued to work, and although I made it a point to take advantage of every chance that came my way, I find myself humbled as I look back and think that anyone would offer kindness and chances to the cripplingly shy, ill-kempt, painfully thin, poorly clothed waif that I must have been at the time.
For all of you out there who have helped me, taught me, and supported me over the years, I tell you that it is only through what you have done for me that I've come as far as I have in my life today. You stepped in and provided for me what I've seen good parents provide for others, and there was nothing at all that bound us, except friendship in some cases. I feel the weight of what you've done for me every day, since I was able to build a good life for myself, and together my husband and I have built a fantastic life together, all starting with the kindness you offered me when I had nothing at all. This is not something I can ever pay back to all of you, I know, so I try to pay it forward to others whenever I can. I also felt that offering my first complete work to the world in general as a free gift, honoring your gifts to me, was another small way I could pay your kindness forward. Thank you once again for all of your kindnesses to me; you have helped make me who I am today, and have helped shape my life. I am forever in your debt.
I'd also like to dedicate this book to those people out there who are stuck in a situation like the one I came from as a child, and for those recovering from the experience. For those still dealing with abuse, you have my understanding and my sorrow. Please take advantage of what resources you can to escape, but if you need to endure for a while, please do whatever you can to keep your spark alive and survive the experience. You are worth it. I look forward to exchanging war stories with you in the future. For those recovering, I am there with you. Part of why I wrote this book was to illustrate to people who aren't survivors what it's like to struggle with recovery, sometimes on a daily basis. I hope I've accomplished that, at least a bit.
